Jason Karmanos has been working with Jim Rutherford since 1998.

His father was the majority owner of the Hurricanes.

Jason Karmanos was one of the three brothers that sued Peter Karmanos in 2016 for taking money out of their trust fund for his own use.

Feds gone until February. Place is once again a smidgen less entertaining.

With regards to the blog, with most of the moves I've seen made, I'm not sure how Sam Ventura and his skill set have factored into much. I'm not behind the scenes though, he could of been very, very against JJ and stubborn old Jim just didn't care. Perhaps Sam pointed how much less efficient Simon was without the puck the past season and that factored into him not wanting to resign him, who knows. What I do know though is that there have been an awful lot of anti-analytics moves made by JR the past several years haha.

I guess I don't fully understand the coaching/FO moves. First they said they needed a new direction and then fired all the Assistants (leaving the Head Coach employed). But now they are saying they need a new direction and fired an AGM (yet again leaving the GM employed). So basically status quo but let's find some scapegoats and get rid of them. Not how I'd run my business.

BRILLIANT!

Maybe it’s JR trying to save his own ass by burying everyone else. If we can see clear awful signings and trades then ownership must obviously be aware too. Maybe they finally stepped in and now JR is blaming everyone else.

I don't think it would have been that big of a gamble...he should have been able to fetch Matheson after he fell off a cliff.

Sam Ventura, Director of Hockey Research, is taking over the analytics duties per the presser.

He’s also the dude who created war on ice (@stat_sam on Twitter).

Honestly I didn’t even think he was employed by the Penguins considering he’s THE analytics guy in the hockey world and a majority of the Pens moves seem to be in the opposite direction in the last few years haha. I figured he was let go after they lucked their way to a cup with Hainsey.

- j.boyd919

Karmanos was supposed to be the analytics guy of the assistant GMs even when they had 4 of them. Wouldn't mind letting Ventura just run that and not have a middle man.

Still, it's weird timing since they did say a month ago GMJR wanted more help, not less. And they just handed Karmanos more responsibility. Now it seems like they could use 2 guys.

He is back.

"The Penguins have added Trevor Daley as a Hockey Operations Advisor.

In his new role, Daley will be based out of Pittsburgh and report directly to Rutherford, assisting in player evaluations at the NHL and AHL level, as well as acting as an 'eye in the sky' for the coaching staff during games"

Travis Yost just posted his top 5 soups..

OFFICIAL SOUP RANKINGS 2020:

1. Lobster Bisque
2. New England Clam Chowder
3. Cream of Chicken and Wild Rice
4. Manhattan Clam Chowder
5. Lentil

999999998. Tomato
999999999. Minestrone

It leads me to the question... is chili a soup? Because if it is.. it should easily be no. 1.

It's criminal to not have any of Cheeseburger Chowder, Chicken Tortilla, Lasagna Soup, or Stuffed Pepper Soup anywhere on that top 5 list.

Chili is a stew. But he’s very obviously including chowders so I don’t see why stews wouldn’t also be included here.

I won’t stand for this French onion slander.

So the Sixers did this with their analytics department after ousting Hinkie: Since Hinkie was the poster child of analytics-based decision making in basketball, they kind of kept his analytics department in tact because they had obviously done a very good job and we’re considered one of the best in the league but then the new GM who couldn’t give a rat’s ass about analytics beyond the optics of saying “we use analytics” put in a yes man as the “Director” of the analytics department who’s job basically became to professionally ignore the stats nerds he was supposedly supervising.

Apparently this isn’t too uncommon. A lot of times, FOs have legit analytics people working the every day data and coming up with good stuff, but a traditional “hockey mind” or “basketball mind” executive is put at the top of the department to neuter the final output. Whether this is by design or whether some GMs legitimately think this strikes a good balance between traditional and analytics based evaluation is probably dependent on which GM we’re talking about. Basically everyone wants to signal that they’re at the bleeding edge of of sports analytics so they have these robust analytics department, but the old guard in charge still doesn’t trust the nerds so they never actually use them or empower them at all.

I’ve always assumed Karmanos was this kind of “analytics” exec since he’s very obviously part of the old boys club of hockey FO people, his dad being who he is. If I were to speculate, at some point Rutherford told him to go babysit the nerds because that was a low-importance job he could give his boss’s kid, and boom. Karmanos became the stats guy in the Carolina FO.

Yea, i mean, Horny isnt bad. He just may not be worth his contract, but its not that far off. My point was really that if we had him for another year and he fell off a cliff, he would be at 5.3x2yrs. which would still be fair to trade for a bad player at 4.875x5yrs.

And after writing it out, if they both suck, one of those contacts is much better than the other. So we'd still lose on that trade...
